Motivation is a push factor," he explained. "It's an outside force that is compelling you to take action, even if you don't necessarily want to. Inspiration, on the other hand, is more of a pull or driving force. It's something that comes from within that gets us to proactively give our best effort

So, inspiration is something that you feel on the inside, while motivation is something from the outside that compels you to take action. Inspiration is a driving force, while motivation which is a pulling force. Some people believe that motivation is for lazy people because they cannot be bothered getting things done

There is a difference between a Motivational Speaker and an Inspirational Speaker and it's good to know which one to hire so that your event is the best one yet. ... Motivation is for the mind like a fun, humorous or loud pep talk, and inspiration is for fulfillment of their spirit.

Motivation is a reason for actions, willingness, and goals. Motivation is derived from the word motive, or a need that requires satisfaction. These needs, wants or desires may be acquired through influence of culture, society, lifestyle, or may be generally innate. An individual's motivation may be inspired by outside forces (extrinsic motivation)[1] or by themselves (intrinsic motivation).[2] Motivation has been considered one of the most important reasons to move forward.[3] Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors. Mastering motivation to allow sustained and deliberate practice is central to high levels of achievement, e.g. in elite sport, medicine, or music.[4] Motivation governs choices among alternative forms of voluntary activity Copying means creating a perfect replica, or at least an attempt. It demonstrates a lack of imagination, there is no creative work nor development, you just saw it, and made exactly the same. You are discarding your own development in order to imitate somebody else’s.

If you follow others, you are not trying to be them, you are only trying either to be more like them or you have a personal affinity; you don’t lose your personality trying to become somebody else. There is a basic difference between being a copycat and being stimulated by that other person actions or work.

Sometimes the borders between both concepts are blurry, especially when someone is so taken by somebody else that following that somebody almost means imitation.

The keyword here is inspiration.

If you copy someone, you are simply trying to be them, in their work, modus operandi, personality… you name it. Nothing new is created.

If you follow someone, it means that you are inspired by them, that you take the best this person has to offer (or what you like) and you try to implement it in your own work, etc. Always from your own perspective and comprehension, not by simply making a copy-paste of that other person’s work.

For instance, a painter that copies somebody else’s work will be shunned, for that painter had put no creative work whatsoever in their oeuvres, disrespecting the work the other painter has put in their craft; it is no different from plagiarism. If they take inspiration from somebody else’s work but their oeuvres are unique in their own way, even if you see the influence from that other style of painting belonging to a different artist, it might succeed. That also applies to other aspects of art such as music.

In the end, bettering yourself by looking at someone you consider a role model is not bad at all, because you are not trying to make profit them you by copying them or what they do. You are only taking inspiration from that person because you feel an affinity for them
