Applying for academic Master’s degree
(Special code: 70230101 Linguistics (English language))
Tashkent, 2023

It is a well-known fact that the one who owns the information owns the world. Indeed, the role of information in our life is great. A modern person is constantly in search of new information, and sometimes is in its flow even against his will, since information surrounds us everywhere: advertising, signs, posters, banners - all this is created in order to attract the attention of a person, so that he thinks about what he sees, what information he perceives, and what he tries to get rid of.

Nowadays, media text is understood as a message containing information and presented in any form and genre of media (newspaper article, TV show, video clip, film, etc.) or a work of informational or artistic nature created for media broadcast (article, film, TV show, radio)
At prersent, the English-language media occupy a special position in the global information space. The volume of texts in the English-language media significantly exceeds the volume of texts in other languages. The topicality of present research illustrates that phraseological units play a special role in creating the reality surrounding a person (the linguistic picture of the world), since the figurative nature of their holistic meaning is closely connected with the background knowledge of native speakers, with their practical life experience, with cultural and historical traditions.
The subject of the research is usage of phraseological units in modern media text. Phraseologisms occupy a significant place in the lexical composition of the language, as they figuratively and accurately convey the idea, reflect various aspects of reality. Phraseologisms arise from a free combination of words, which is used in a figurative sense.

The dissertation is framed according to the requirements, written in a competent, scientific language. The dissertation work consists of abstract, statement of intent, literature review, data collection, reflections, references and bibliography.

The conclusions are based on the analysis of the examples to the latest words relating to different functional styles, including literature and dictionaries. The researcher used a number of the most recent dictionaries as well as the Internet sources which adds to the value of the thesis.
All the tasks of the work are solved successfully and well presented in good English.
However, there are some shortcomings in this dissertation. They are:

  1. There are some of grammatical, stylistic and spelling errors in the work;

  2. References to the literature are not given in the text of the thesis itself.

All in all, the above-mentioned shortcomings do not undermine the overall positive value of the dissertation. The research represents an accomplished investigation, meets the requirements for a Master’s dissertation and can be submitted to defence.
