PARTICIPLES

  • AS ADJECTIVES:
  • Verb+ING (active)
  • e.g. screaming children (they are doing it themselves)
  • Verb+ED OR 3RD FORM (passive)
  • e.g. stolen jewellery (was done by someone)
  • PARTICIPLE CLAUSES:
  • e.g. Feeling tired (participle clause + active), I went to bed (the main clause).
  • e.g. The man injured in the accident (participle clause + passive) was taken to hospital.

  • 1) The man injured in the accident (participle clause + passive) was taken to hospital.
  • 2) Feeling tired (participle clause + active), I went to bed (the main clause).

HAVING +3rd FORM OF THE VERB

  • HAVING +3rd FORM OF THE VERB
  • e.g. Having found (participle clause + the action happened before another action) a hotel, they looked for somewhere to have dinner.
  • e.g. Having finished our work, we went home.
  • AFTER
  • e.g. After finishing our work, we went home.
  • WHILE/WHEN
  • e.g. Jim hurt his arm while playing tennis. (while he was playing)

Choose the correct option.

  • Some kids discovered the stolen money hiding/hidden in a garden.
  • The police on this motorway are busy fining/fined people for speeding.
  • I have often met people collecting/collected shells on the beach.
  • Drivers fining/fined for speeding risk losing their licences.

From each pair of sentences make one sentence using an -ing clause.

  • e.g.She was sitting in an armchair. She was reading a book.
  • She was sitting in an armchair reading a book.
  • Jill was lying on the bed. She was crying.
  • I got home. I was feeling very tired.
  • Ann was watching television. She fell asleep.

Make sentences by using HAVING.....

  • e.g. We finished our work. We went home.
  • Having finished our work, we went home.
  • We bought our tickets. Then we went into the theatre.
  • They had dinner. Then they continued on their journey.
  • Sue did all her shopping. Then she went for a cup of coffee.
