PHONOLOGICAL THEORIES AND SCHOOLS, PHONOLOGICAL THEORIES OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MOSCOW PHONOLOGICAL SCHOOL What are the phonological theories? ■ Contemporary theories of phonology include optimality theory, nonlinear phonology, and representation-based accounts of children’s speech. Each of these offers alternative explanations as well as descriptions of speech acquisition and SSD in children. ■ What is the general theory of phonology? In addition to the minimal units that can serve the purpose of differentiating meaning (the phonemes), phonology studies how sounds alternate, or replace one another in different forms of the same morpheme (allomorphs, as well as, for example, syllable structure, stress, feature geometry, tone, and intonation. ■ Why is phonological theories important? One important function of incorporating distinctive features into a theory of phonological representation is to provide a physically grounded vocabulary for distinguishing speech sounds from one another; in fact, the “distinctive” part of “distinctive features” is meant to highlight this function. ■ What are distinctive features in phonological theory? In phonological theory the building blocks of speech sounds are often argued to be what are called “distinctive features.” They typically have phonetic definitions and phonetically inspired names (e.g., [voice], [nasal], [labial]). What are the phonological rules in English? Phonological rules can be roughly divided into four types: Assimilation: When a sound changes one of its features to be more similar to an adjacent sound. … ■ Dissimilation: When a sound changes one of its features to become less similar to an adjacent sound, usually to make the two sounds more distinguishable.
