ST. JEAN BAPTISTE HIGH SCHOOL │ ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015
1 The goal of the faculty and administration is to nurture in each student the following qualities and characteristics of womanhood. Our mission is to empower each student to become: • A Woman of Academic Excellence
Founded in 1929, St. Jean Baptiste High School, located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, educates young women of diverse strengths and backgrounds. Through a rigorous academic program, St. Jean Baptiste High School prepares its graduates to excel in college and their future professions.
As a Catholic community rooted in the spirit of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, the foundress of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, St. Jean Baptiste High School develops women of faith, service, and leadership and empowers the whole community to participate actively in the transformation of society for a more just world.

The St. Jean Baptiste High School Com- munity was incredibly proud to celebrate our 85 th Anniversary this past year. To commemo- rate such a momentous occasion, our students created an initiative named the “85 Acts of Kindness” with a goal of completing 340 acts of kindness—85 per grade—between Septem- ber 2014 and May 2015.
Our students, faculty, staff and alumnae used social media to share their good deeds and encouraged others to do the same and by May they collectively completed 839 kind acts! As a result of their great efforts and positive activities, St. Jean’s was selected to participate in the “Mean Stinks” campaign, a national movement sponsored by
to combat bullying. Over 20,000 students across the country watched the event which streamed live and two St. Jean Baptiste students were selected to be our spokeswomen.
In addition to participating in activities that serve others, our students are involved in a number of wonderful enrichment programs in and out of school. This past summer we had students partici- pate in Adventures of the Mind, a program that offers students the opportunity to be mentored by ac- complished adults—such as Amy Tan, author of the Joy Luck Club. A senior completed The Sonia & Celina Sotomayor High School Judicial Internship Program culminating in meeting Chief Justice Sotomayor! Dreamyard, an arts-focused non-profit awarded a sophomore student an all-expenses paid educational trip to Paris. For one week she visited Parisian national treasures such as the Eiffel Tow- er and the Picasso, Pompidou and Louvre Museums.
These experiences are the result of all the support we receive from our donors. Your gifts allow us to fulfill our mission of providing an excellent college preparatory education for young women, offer new academic courses, such as Forensic Science (which launched in September 2015) and establish enrichment programs through various partnerships. Through your generosity, you have a direct impact on educating young women. Your gift helps us sustain a nurturing envi- ronment where our students become empowered to be leaders for others and actively participate in the transformation of society for a more just world. We look forward to another 85 years! Thank you
Warmly,
Sr. Maria Cassano, CND Principal MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

All students receive a college preparatory education consisting of a rigorous academic program, exposure to enrichment programs and extracurricular activities. Graduates earn a High School Diploma by satisfactorily completing the studies set forth by the New York State Board of Regents. Each student is expected to attain a New York State Regents Diploma in addition to a St. Jean’s Diploma. Our programming allows students as early as 10th grade to take Advanced Place- ment courses that result in college credit once the courses are successfully completed. Approxi- mately 350 students were enrolled during the 2014-2015 Academic Year and all members of the Class of 2015 are scheduled to attend college this fall. We are proud of the diversity that our stu- dent body represents which is demonstrated by the fact that our students speak over 20 languages and represent more than 50 countries from around the world.
The Christian Service Program at St. Jean’s helps to instill in students a passion for social justice. All Grade 12 students are required to volunteer at service agencies and work directly with young children, the elderly, the sick, the developmentally challenged and the socio-economically disadvan- taged. Seniors offer one day of service each week and complete a minimum of 140 hours during the course of the year, but often complete more. Additionally, students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 al- so complete volunteer service with community institutions and in their own neighborhoods.
St. Jean’s has partnered with two local hospitals to offer medicine-focused internships to our stu- dents. At Northshore LIJ-Lenox Hill Hospital, students complete a 10-week internship, during which Physician Assistants (PA's) at Lenox Hill serve as mentors to our Jeanites. The students shadow PA's as they make their rounds, participate in discussion sessions and perform 40 hours of volunteer work. At the conclusion of the internship, students write a 2,000-word essay on the role PA’s play in the care of a patient and receive a certificate from Northshore LIJ-Lenox Hill con- firming their fulfillment of the program's obligations. The Weill Cornell Health Professions Re- cruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) program also lasts 10-weeks, during which sophomore and junior students learn from physicians and other health care professionals in the form of lec- tures on a broad range of topics and small group workshops led by medical students. Students are also required to submit a short research paper on a pre-approved subject at the conclusion of the program.
All clubs and sports teams are moderated by faculty who work with students to build extracurricu- lar activities that are both fun and educational. Among our clubs are dance teams, yearbook, cook- ing, photography, art and others. Our sport teams include competitive soccer and softball teams who practice and play in close-by Central Park.

4 CLASS OF 2015—GRADUATION On June 5, 2015 the ninety-nine members of the senior class graduated in St. Jean Baptiste Church—officially becoming the Class of 2015!
The entire SJB community and the graduates in particular, were brimming with pride and excitement. This momentous occasion marked the culmination of four years of hard work, sacrifice and transformation. Our young graduates realize that the next step in their academic lives will be challenging but they are confident that they posses the skills necessary to succeed in college.
Thanks to the support of faculty, family and donors, our young women completed a rigorous academic program complemented by enrichment programs and extracurricular activities resulting in our students finding their voices, developing personally and academically and being empowered to pursue their dreams while being of service to others.
