2. Sense of autonomy
• The second important ingredient is learners feeling a sense of autonomy. Many language learners may find themselves forced to attend language classes. It is vital we help them feel that they have some degree of influence and control over what happens to them and their learning. How to promote a sense of autonomy • For teachers, this means building in options for ‘choice and voice’ wherever possible. It need not be big options such as in choosing course content which may not be possible in rigid curricular. Instead it can be reflected in small actions in which teachers offer learners a choice between two tasks, allow them to choose partners to work with, or to select the kind of output for a task they would prefer to create. A sense of autonomy is also fostered in the small daily actions in which teachers show their learners respect and ensure they feel involved in their learning. 3. Sense of relatedness • The third and perhaps most important ingredient is the sense of relatedness learners feel in their language classroom. This refers to the quality of relationships that learners experience both with their teacher and among their peers. • Often learners are more concerned about what their peers will think of them when they use their foreign language, than they are about speaking in front of the teacher. As such, the psychological safety of the classroom is critical to communicative success and active participation. How to promote positive relationships • Teachers must enforce a zero tolerance policy for any kind of uncooperative behavior. Learners must be supported in developing their empathy and appreciation of each other, as well as their sense of cohesiveness as a group. • A useful strategy can be to repeatedly engage in ice breaker tasks throughout the year. This will reinforce and strengthen positive group dynamics. Spending class time on fostering positive peer relationships will aid the learning environment. Especially in the language classroom which depends so heavily on cooperation and collaboration. • The other key relationship is that between the teacher and learner. It is important for teachers to invest time and energy in nurturing these relationships. Try to get to know learners as individuals, know their names, find out about their hobbies. Simply by engaging in those small moments of conversation will help to build a personal bond. Learners need to know you care about them as individuals and that their learning matters to you. • In summary, triggering and maintaining learner engagement is a complex undertaking and there are no quick, easy, one-size-fits-all solutions. However, ensuring our learners feel confident, have a sense of ownership about their learning, and feel cared for and psychologically safe in our classrooms are the best foundations for engagement to blossom. However you learn best, without the right conditions you’re in trouble. Create the right conditions and you’re setting yourself up for success. I'm talking about fitting your learning into your daily life in a way that is most likely to work. First, there’s the basics: if you know you’ll be tired after work, study in the morning; if you know you start to zone out after 20 minutes of study, aim for 10; and, as I said earlier, if you hate cartoons in English, don’t even think about using them to learn. One of the best ways to create the conditions for success is to use a fun and effective method. a method that gets you fluent thanks to stories, not rules. Download 173.45 Kb.
