If we’ve ever tried searching definition the term “an assessment tool” Google or dictionaries, the search results cause to be confused. Assessment tools have been around for ages, but in the last years, the term got a couple of new meanings. But before starting the discussion assessment tools, basing on gained knowledge from previous lesson, let me remind a clear definition of what an assessment is. As we know, an assessment refers to the process of evaluating a person or a situation, based on the available information surrounding particular subject or area. This judgment is done by a series of questions with a score or categorization that returns some results. This definition is very generic, though we can differentiate the assessment’s purpose based on context. (Is it referred of learning, for learning, as learning) An assessment tool is an activity or software that helps you set up such an assessment and analyzes the results. The term “assessment tool” is often used to describe the assessment methodology. A methodology is a way of assessing the subject based on a specific theory or framework. There is no one best assessment test or technique. An assessment which is ideal for one purpose may be useless in another. But all good assessment follows five guidelines. ❖ Mirror learning. Assessment should look like learning. If students are only doing reading and writing in the classroom, they should not be assessed on speaking and listening. ❖ Contribute to learning. Students can and should learn from assessment. While we use assessment to judge students’ ability and knowledge, we can also learn what students know as well as what they still need to know. ❖ Motivate learners and build confidence. Assessment should not be scary. Students should be motivated to display their knowledge through assessment and feel good about showing what they do know. Assessment should allow all learners to experience success. ❖ Include a variety of technique. Different learning styles should be addressed through assessment so that all learners are able to display their knowledge, not only visual learners. ❖ Take place over time. Assessment is an ongoing process. We need lots of “snapshots” or “samples” of our students’ work to accurately assess their progress in all four skills, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Assessment tools are techniques used to measure a student’s academic abilities, fluency and skills in a specific subject or to measure one’s progress toward academic proficiency in a specific subject area. An assessment tools refer to learning methods educators use to make informed decisions regarding strategies to enhance student learning. This helps determine if learning interferences are needed to ensure student success. An assessment tool can also be used to execute the assessment either digitally or with pen and paper. The letter can be simple and is often used in educational settings. Yes/No cards, Thumbs up/down, Mind mapping are all examples of formative assessment tools.
