Sir Thomas More and “Utopia”
Analysis of the novel
The utopia of Thomas More was written in Latin, but later, in 1551, it was translated into English. More was a humanist, where he absorbed the classical thoughts of Aristotle and Plato. In his book "Utopia", More makes fun of the socio-political and religious hypocrisy of Europe at that time. ___________________________ 7 Chambers, RW (1935). Thomas More. Harcourt, Brace. He opposed the secession of King Henry VIII from the Roman Catholic Church. He criticizes England's strict laws and, on the contrary, portrays a corrupt society, creating a world that is opposite to European society. The book contains a spirit of humanism, which at that time was overflowing. Many humanists have returned to study classical writers and philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato, and much more is no exception. He was influenced by Plato's "Republic", but, unlike Plato, he uses more scientists in his book to depict life in an ideal world. In his book, More also devoted himself to the principles of justice, aesthetics, the construction of peace and harmony, which reflect the spirit of humanism and classical learning in his book. However, the book also contains stories within the story. The main story in the book is the society depicted by More, but the book opens with another story by Raphael Hytloday, whom More met through Peter Giles. Hytloday told stories about his journey to the New World and told many more stories about the utopian world. The book begins with the fact that More is currently sending his documents to Peter Giles for him to edit his documentary about the world of utopia for publications. Hytloday's stories are extensive and contain many reflections on society, the Armed Forces, education, government and religion in the world of utopia. The book also reads in a contrasting way, through the prism of European social, political and religious problems. According to Hytloday, the world of utopia surpasses the customs of Europeans, which directly criticizes European society and its political structures. He also mentions that the death penalty against thieves, labor, land reform and the abolition of private property do not correspond to practice and are completely different in the world of utopia. In the world of utopia, society is civilized and morally direct, although many utopians are not Christians, unlike a Christian nation like Europe, where people have morally degraded and committed crimes. According to European laws such as labor, labor is unequal, but the utopian world distributes equal labor for each individual. Every person in Utopia works three hours before and after lunch to create a sense of justice and equality. In Europe, land reforms and private property were abolished, which became a problem in Europe, but the world of utopia has eliminated the system of private property, and the lands in utopia are distributed equally among all people without exception.
