Fraud—Here, There, and Everywhere
First, we have to recognize an ugly truth. The reason there is so
much fraud in business, as in all areas of society from corked
bats to cooked books, is that it works—sometimes. If you steal
$50 million, chances are you’ll get to keep 15%-20% of it after
the taxes, the lawyer’s fees, the fines, and about two years—
maybe five, if they’re really mad at you—at Club Fed. If you
don’t mind doing the perp walk for the media with a couple of
deputies at your elbows, if you don’t mind your kids knowing
that you took money away from their friends’ parents and
grandparents, if you don’t mind that colleagues cannot find
work because of their association with you—if you don’t mind
any of that, you’re probably enough of an amoral sociopath to
give it a shot.
You’re going to run across fraud in your managerial life.
You’ll recognize it because that’s when some person or organiza-
tion willfully makes an untrue representation about an important
fact or event to you or your organization. You believe it. You rely
on it. You act on it. And you lose money or property as result of
relying on their false representation. The fraud’s gains can be
either direct or indirect, money, property, a job promotion ....

This is a brief guide to understanding fraud—if you don’t already.
Bribery is giving, receiving, offering, or soliciting anything of value in
order to influence a person in the imperfect performance of their
duties.
Illegal gratuity is giving, receiving, offering, or soliciting, after the fact,
anything of value for or because of the perfect or imperfect execution
of an official act.
Conflict of interest is when a person has a hidden bias or self-inter-
est that would adversely affect someone else and acts on that bias to
cause that person a loss.
