Financial Ratios Worksheet from Chapter 4
Since this example was prepared for demonstration purposes
and not based on a real company, there are some interesting
things happening here. The examples are to help you learn how
a ratio operates and give you some feel for whether you may be
getting good or bad data.
In these ratios for General Widget, the Current, at 1.5, and
the Quick, at 1.02, look low. One of the first things we would
want to do is find out the widget industry averages.
The collection period at 51 days and change is running a bit
long, but what’s funny is the payment period—363 days, almost
a year. Then you look and see that you only used the direct
materials. There were probably a lot of other purchases. Your
accounting software is going to have to be able to capture that
information so that all purchases are included.
