encountered her. It was exactly eight years since he had seen her.

features reminded him of Italian Renaissance portraits.
—How well you look! You haven’t changed a bit—he said. It was the month of May and they

—It’s just that my changes don’t show.
He had left Manhattan a little after having seen her for the last time, because her husband, a
prominent literary critic, had been offered a chair in a university in the northern part of the state.
—Are you visiting the city? he asked her.
—Yes. For a few days—she replied and approached him.—And you Mike? How is your life?
—I’m married, I have two children, and I work in a bank—he said.
—A bank?
His wife came from a family of bankers.
—Yes. I write their monthly bulletin.
The last time that they had seen each other Mike’s greatest desire had been to become a playwright.
He had never wanted to look for a steady job because, according to him, he needed time to write.
—Do you like it?
—Of course not.
Eight years ago, when they were both single, they had spoken of how wonderful it would be to have
children. He thought about how marvelous it would be and he wanted to; but the idea horrifed her.
