1 Rules are there to protect us and to ensure we do not harm ourselves or others. They help us 
behave correctly and keep us safe. 
2 You might accidentally break the rules or misinterpret them if you are unfamiliar with them. 
Doing so may just cause you to be embarrassed but could also cause difficulties for you.
3 Many schools ban the use of mobile phones in class. 
4 A neighbourhood charter is a set of rules that state what is acceptable behaviour for the people 
who live in a particular community – it is a list of dos and don’ts.
5 Learners’ own responses. 
6 An unwritten rule is one that is neither official nor written down but is an expected way of 
behaving in a particular situation. For example, don’t play music on speakers in a public space – 
use headphones instead.
