4.2.2.2 Single-word terms
There are 27 occurrences of single word-terms in the source speeches and 148 in
the students’ interpretations. As can be seen in Table 20, there is a really high
average percentage of close renditions, showing that almost three-quarters of
terms were correctly translated.

Zero renditions are the second most frequent type of rendition, with 10.49%, which
is quite logical given that single-word terms are short and refer to a specific
concept or field (Khan, 2016). If the student does not have that knowledge, then
an omission can be made.
(73) amoeba (Item #32 – IN01): omitted by four students
(74) titanium (Item #58 – IN04): omitted by three students
It is really surprising to see that 5.35% of single-terms were condensed. In fact,
some items were generalized or simplified as they are made of more than one
element. Finally, there is one innovative rendition (see example 77), probably due
to a slip of the tongue. Nevertheless, the word does not exist in the target
language (French).
(75) cross-connections (Item #60 – IN01) > ce genre de connexions (STU01), ces
connexions (STU04)
(76) neuroscientists (Item #6 – IN03) > scientifiques (STU02, STU05)
(77) synapses > synapsis (Item #54 - IN02_STU07)
Across students, STU02 stands out by having the highest percentage of divergent
renditions (22.22%) and the lowest percentage of close renditions (62.96%).
Single-word terms are then the most challenging for STU02. In addition, it is
surprising to see the proportion of omitted single-word terms by STU05, reaching
23.07% of all items (these items being virussuperhearing, and hearing).
