Finally, it is interesting to see that some NPs were omitted by both students. For 
the first pattern (A + N), both students omitted schizophrenic people (IN01) and 
Martian alphabet (IN01). If we take a closer look at the first example, we see that 
the whole message was not conveyed in both interpretations. 
Original sentence: “… So you don't take the metaphor literally although 
schizophrenic people do but we don’t and we’re not going to do.” 
Interpreted sentence: “… ehm ce genre de lien est donc totalement inespéré de la 
part de de gens qui ne qui ne qui ne le comprennent pas.” (STU01) 
Interpreted sentence : « … Non on ne prend pas la métaphore au pied de la lettre.”

Investigating zero renditions is really interesting because we really need to take a 
close look at the student’s output to know if the omission is justified or unjustified. 
We can conclude that the omissions presented in this small-scale study represent

the different types of omissions in Barik’s taxonomy: there are some examples of 
skipping (Snow), of delay (Aldous Huxley, schizophrenic people – STU02) and 
also of comprehension (schizophrenic people – STU01). In some cases, the 
omission is completely justified and does not alter the message as the source text 
was redundant (Martian alphabet). However, in other cases, the omission is a bit 
more problematic as the original meaning is not completely translated (Aldous 
Huxley, schizophrenic people). 
As this small-scale study only presents the linguistic categories with the most 
occurrences of zero renditions (proper names and complex noun phrases), it 
would be of a great interest to carry out further research on zero renditions for the 
other linguistic categories.
