In total, the English source speeches contain 365 occurrences of the difficulties
examined here and each of them contains approximately the same number of
potentially problematic items (IN01 has the lowest number of items while IN02 has
the highest). Table 5 shows that complex noun phrases are, by far, the most
frequent category, as there are 265 NPs in the source speeches, representing
72.6% of the difficulties faced by interpreter trainees. The most frequent pattern of
NPs is “A + N” (adjective + noun), with 113 occurrences, representing 42.64% of
all NPs and 30.96% of the total number of difficulties. The second most frequent
category is “N + prep + N” (noun + preposition + noun), with 71 occurrences,
representing 26.79% of all NPs and 19.45% of the total number of difficulties.
Finally, the third most frequent pattern of NPs is “N + subclause” (noun +
subclause), with 46 occurrences, representing 17.36% of all NPs and 12.6% of all
difficulties. The other subcategories of NPs will not be investigated in the present
thesis as they are less frequent, representing, altogether, 13.2% of NPs (35
occurrences) and 9.59% of all difficulties.
