Babies are learning that things they can’t see still exist. It is
this sense of
“object permanence” that helps babies not cry when their mother is out of
sight. Babies come to learn that even
though their parent is gone, she still
exists and they are still safe.
Babies also have to scan their environment for the missing item and then
zero in on where it is, which reinforces both open and focused attention.
