Case № 8 I Formulation of the case-task: Morphological structure of English words Besides the semasiological point of view words may also be distinguished from other fundamental language unit, namely, the morpheme. Morphemes occur in speech only as constituent parts of words. Although words may consist of a single morpheme. Morphemes are indivisible into smaller meaningful units. That’s why the morpheme may be defined as minimum meaningful language unit. According to the role they play in constructing words morphemes are subdivided into: root and affixes. The latter are further subdivided according to their position, their function and meaning into some other groups. Make use of the tables, schemes, diagrams etc. 2.Give some information about the root and affixes. Give examples. 3.Speak about derivational and functional affixes. The average speaker knows thousands of words, and new words enter our minds and our language on a daily basis. Word-formation – is a branch of linguistics, which studies the patterns on which a language forms new lexical items (new unities, new words). It is the creation of new words from elements already existing in the language. One of the productive way of word formation is an affixation, i.e. the process of forming words by combining root and affixal morphemes according to certain patterns specific for the language.
