I Formulation of the case-task
«Homonyms, synonyms, antonym and their classifications»
Many words, especially characterized by a high frequency are not connected with meaning by one- to- one relationship. One the contrary, one symbol as a rule serves to render several different meanings. There is an obvious difference between the meaning of the symbol e.g. “fast” in such combinations as “to run fast” (quickly) and “ to stand fast” (firmly).
All the possible values of each linguistic sign are listed (given) in dictionaries. It is very important to differentiate homonyms and unite them into polysemy and homonymy, as polysemantic words and homonyms have identical sound forms and spelling. And also English words are classified into such semantic units as synonyms and antonyms.
II Try to find out the solutions of the following problems:
1.Give a full description of lexico-semantic groupings of English words as homonyms, synonyms and antonyms on the basis of the given brief information. Make use of the tables, schemes, diagrams etc.
2.Give the definition of a synonym and speak about criteria of synonyms and their types. Give examples.
3.Characterize homonyms and define their types. Give examples.
4.Speak about antonyms and their types by giving examples.
III Pair the antonyms and group them according to the classification of antonyms.
Add 2-3 more examples of your own to each column.
