Case task № 5
I Formulation of the case-task: Syllabic structure of words in the English language
Being the smallest pronounceable units, syllables form morphemes and words. The syllable is complicated phenomenon and like a phoneme it can be studied on four levels - articulatory, acoustic, auditory and functional. The syllable as a unit is difficult to define, though native speakers of a language are usually able to state how many syllables there are in a definite word. But the sequence of CVCV presents a great difficulty to Russian and Kazakh students. Explain the reason of this type of syllables. Give some information about the phonetic and orthographic syllables.
II Try to find out the solutions of the following problems:
1.Give a full contrastive description of the syllabic structure of words in the English language and the Russian (Kazakh) languages on the basis of the given brief information.
Make use of the tables, schemes, diagrams etc.
1.Name syllable formation theories and characterize their advantages and disadvantages.
2.Analyze types of syllables giving examples for each type in compared languages.
3.What are the main syllable division rules in the English language?
4.Complete the following table using the types of syllables. Give examples.
