CHAPTER III. LESSON PLAN OF THE USE OF COMICS IN LANGUAGE TEACHING
LESSON PLAN Title: The Use of Comics in Language Teaching Grade Level: University Duration: 90 minutes Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have a better understanding of the use of comics in language teaching and be able to: 1. Analyze the use of comics as a language-teaching tool 2. Understand the benefits and challenges of using comics in language teaching 3. Create a comic strip to demonstrate language learning Materials: - Comics in the target language (e.g., French, Spanish, etc.) - Whiteboard and markers - Handouts with comic strip templates - Pens and pencils Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students if they have ever read a comic book or graphic novel. 2. Ask them if they think comics can be used as a tool for language teaching. 3. Write their responses on the whiteboard. Activity 1: Analyzing Comics (30 minutes): 1. Provide each student with a comic in the target language. 2. Have them read the comic and analyze the following elements: - Characters - Plot - Dialogue - Setting - Tone 3. Have them discuss their analysis in small groups. 4. Ask each group to present their analysis to the class. Activity 2: Benefits and Challenges (30 minutes): 1. Using the whiteboard, create two columns labeled "Benefits" and "Challenges." 2. Have students brainstorm the benefits and challenges of using comics in language teaching. 3. Discuss the benefits and challenges as a class. Activity 3: Creating a Comic Strip (20 minutes): 1. Provide each student with a comic strip template. 2. Instruct them to create a comic strip that demonstrates language learning. 3. They can use their own language or the target language. 4. Encourage them to be creative and have fun with this activity. 5. Once they are done, have them share their comic strips with the class. Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Recap the benefits and challenges of using comics in language teaching. 2. Ask students if they feel more comfortable using comics in their language learning. 3. Allow students to ask any final questions or provide feedback on the lesson. Assessment: To assess the students' understanding, you can use the following methods: - Observe their participation in the activities and discussions. - Review their comic strip creations, checking for accuracy and creativity. - Conduct a brief quiz or written reflection on the benefits and challenges of using comics in language teaching. Extension: For an extension activity, you can have students create a longer comic strip or graphic novel in the target language, using their newfound knowledge of language learning and comics.
