UNIT 16 CONDITIONALS

• 
  Zero conditional is used when we talk about usual and general situations and facts:
  

IF+S+DO…S+DO…
If you water boils it turns into steam.

• 
  First conditional is used when we talk about real future:
  

IF+S+DO…S+WILL/SHALL+DO…
If you come before her you will get the prize.

• 
  Second conditional is used when we talk about unreal present or future. When we imagine or when we talk about dreams:
  

IF+S+DID…S+WOULD/SHOULD+DO…
Could/might are also possible instead of would. In unreal condition were is usually used instead of was.
If I were millionaire I would have my private plane.
If I gave you the watch you could lose it.

Would is not normally used after if but it is possible to say if … would, especially when we ask someone to do something in a formal way:
I would be grateful if you would send me your brochure and price list as soon as possible.

  We also use the past for a present situation after wish to say that we regret something, that something is not as we would like it to be:
  

I wish I knew Sue’s telephone number. (I don’t know it)

• 
  Sometimes could is possible to use instead of would be able to and sometimes was able to:
  

She could(=would be able to) get a job more easily if she could(=was able to)type.

• 
  Sometimes we can use would after wish when we want something to happen or someone to do something. the speaker is complaining about the present situation. Remember, we use I wish … would when we want something to change or somebody else to do something. So, we cannot say I wish I would…:
  

The music next door is very loud. I wish they would turn it down.

• 
  Sometimes would is the past of will:
  

Tom: I will lend you some money, Ann. (present)
Tom said that he would lend Ann some money. (past)

• 
  We can also use would when we look back on the past and remember things that often happened like, used to:
  

When we were children, we lived by the sea. In summer, if the weather was fine, we would all get up early and go for a swim.
