Attention Grabbers

Making Partners and Groups

  1. Counting off 1-2

  2. Matching colored slips of paper

  3. Matching puzzle pieces

  4. Clock partners

Give each student a clock.
Students ask other students to be their partner at a time of day.
They should write each other’s names on the clock.
Call out a time, for example, 1 o’clock. Students find the partner they wrote at 1 o’clock.

Daily Mingle

  1. Make groups of different sizes each time you mingle.

  2. Play music when students mingle. When the music stops, students find a partner.

  3. Do a survey.

  4. Think and mingle.

Give students 3 minutes to think about a topic before you ask them to mingle.
Wrap-up

  1. Ask wrap-up reflection questions.

What is one thing that you learned today?
What is one question that you still wonder?
What is one way someone helped you to learn?

  1. Students answer the questions:

with their elbow partner
in a mingle
in their journal

Exit Ticket

  1. Written exit ticket:

Give each student a piece of paper.
Ask an exit ticket question about the lesson objective.
Students write the answer and give it to you as they leave the room.

  1. Oral exit ticket

Students line up at the door and quickly respond to an exit ticket.
If students don’t know how to respond, they can stand by you and listen to the other students’ responses until they are ready to respond.
This is a fast assessment. Don’t create a long exit ticket or spend time teaching. If a student needs help, help them during the next lesson.
