Activity 6: Reading Whiteboard Quiz. 10 Tips for Giving and Checking Instructions

  1. Write “ICQ” on the board. Ask what it means. Explain that ICQs are instruction check questions and are one way to check that students understand instructions.

  2. Divide into groups of 3-4 Mentees.

  3. Ask Mentees to open their Workbooks to Week 3 – Modified 10 Tips article or open the article online.

  4. Give Mentees 5 minutes to read the article, take notes and/or underline key words.

  5. After 5 minutes, give the mentees 3 minutes to discuss their notes and/or key words.

  6. Give each group a mini-whiteboard (or piece of paper) and marker.

  7. Give instructions & write them on the board:

    1. I will ask a question.

    2. Discuss the answer with your group.

    3. You can use your notes. You cannot use the article.

    4. Write your answer on the board.

    5. When I say, “3,2,1 boards up!”, raise your board to show your answer.

    6. Ask ICQs to check understanding.

  8. Do a whiteboard quiz. Example questions:

    1. What is the first thing you should do when you give instructions? (plan)

    2. Why should you pause when giving instructions? (so students have time to understand each instruction)

    3. What does “chunk instructions” mean? (break instructions into small parts)

    4. True or False. “Do you understand?” is a good way to check that students understood instructions. (F)

    5. What are ICQs? (instruction check questions)
