Activity 4: Stand Up/Sit Down
The purpose of this activity is to give long, wordy instructions that are difficult to understand, then give concise instructions that are easy to understand.
Give long, wordy instructions for the stand-up/sit down activity:
I’m going to read some statements to you. After I read the statement, if it is true for you, you should stand up. If I read the statement and it’s not true, you should not stand up. You should stay seated. Does everyone understand? Ok, let’s go.
Read this statement:
I have taught English for more than 5 years.
Ask Mentees if they understood the instructions.
Start the activity again with clear instructions, gestures, and modeling:
I will read a sentence.
If the statement is true for you, stand up.
If the statement is not true for you, sit down.
What do you do if the statement is true? What if it’s false? Ok, let’s try one together.
I have a pet.
If all Mentees understood the instructions, continue with the statements:
Stand up if you . . .
like to visit new places.
have traveled by plane.
have visited the United States.
would like to travel to space.
can stand on one foot for 10 seconds (show us!)
