Samuel Butler's ideas seem to be of interest far beyond the religious and scientific 
interests of the 1870s.

Butler is critical of what he sees as the contradictory logic of the late 
nineteenth century. Knowledge has become too impractical. Erewhon's odd attitude 
toward illness may be a commentary on later Victorians' attitudes toward illness. 
With the passage of the Communicable Diseases Act and other laws, people can be 
subjected to compulsory medical examinations and removed from their homes to be 
kept under police surveillance or charitable societies. Prostitutes were the hardest hit 
by such legislation, which was largely a reaction to the rise in syphilis. 
Such sentiments still exist. Smokers, alcoholics, AIDS patients, or even 
women with breast cancer are sometimes treated like criminals. If they behaved 
correctly, they would not have such health problems. So, the Erewons are mistaken 
in holding such views?
