ACTIVITY: Work in groups. Answer the questions.
Interaction pattern: plenary/ individual
Time: 5 min
Objective: to talk about what should be done to protect the land from desertification;
PP do the task in groups. Go round and check that all groups understand what to do and can manage the task. After a while hold a short round up session and go through possible suggestions. Give a chance to all groups to contribute.
Activity: Work in pairs. Answer the questions.
Interaction pattern: peer work
Time: 7 min
Objectives: to raise awareness of maintaining and recycling soil; to prepare for reading.
PP work in pairs and answer the questions. Accept all possible answers. Do not say if they are right or wrong, as PP will check their answers in 2c.

Objective to infer what is not explicitly stated in the text; to check the answers to 2b
PP read, listen and check their answers to 1 and 2b. The answers are not stated directly. PP must infer from the text e.g. that burning straw is a wrong because putting the straw back into the earth makes the earth better. For this reason burning is a waste.

A very important ingredient of soil is its living population. Millions of organisms help break down the plant and animal remains. They put back chemical nutrients into the soil, where they are used again. In this way, the earth creates new nutrients for new plant growth and solves the problem of dead plants and animals. In other words, the earth has a natural recycling system

Activity: Show and Tell. 5 min


Materials: Child’s choice
Objective: to improve pupils’ social skills
Each child can choose to show off their favorite, toy, stuffs, book, game, etc. to the others. This is a great way to encourage social skills while they get to know one another. Be sure and have extra things available for those who might forget their favorite show and tell thing. It won’t be their favorite thing, but it will give them something to talk about with the others, so they won’t feel left out.
