REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 
 
Vocabulary 
Vocabulary is one of the skill that 
have to master by the students if they 
want to learn a language. According to 
Linse (2005: 121) Vocabulary is the 
collection of words that an individual 
knows. Learning vocabulary is one of 
important thing for people who want to 
learn second language or foreign 
language. If they do not know many of 
vocabularies they will difficult to use the 
language in their life.
Taylor (2011) said that children 
who want to learn a language they have 
to know the vocabulary.It means that 
children who learn second or foreign 
language they have to know the 
vocabulary 
first, 
because 
without 
vocabulary theywill be difficult to 
master in other skill like listening, 
speaking, reading and writing. So, it can 
be concluded that, learning vocabulary is 
one of important thing if people want to 
master in a language. 
 
Teaching Vocabulary for Young Learners 
Teaching vocabulary for young 
learners is very important, because 
without vocabulary the children will not 
master in a language and they will be a 
passive children. Taylor (2011) said that 
teaching vocabulary is laborious process. 
It means that teaching vocabulary is 
difficult but the teachers have to teach it. 
If the children or students do not know 
many of vocabularies, they are not able 
to speak, to read and to write something. 
Because of that, the teacher must think

the strategies how to teach the young 
learner in vocabulary.
Linse states that (2005) it is 
important to help young learners expand 
their vocabularies through formal and 
informal 
instruction. 
For 
formal 
intruction the teachers teach the 
students the meanings of words and 
ways to uncover the meaning of words 
through direct instruction and informal 
instruction is non- rule oriented and 
often “ by the way “ approach. It means 
that, when teach the young learners or 
Junior High School students, teachers can 
be use two ways, they are formal and 
informal instructions. Formal intructions 
is the teacher give a way how to find the 
meaning of the words and informal 
instructions is the students will get the 
meaning of the words by naturally.
According to Nation in Linse 
(2005) 
teachers 
should 
facilitate 
vocabulary learning by teaching learners 
useful words and by the teaching 
strategies to help learners figure out 
meanings on their own. Then, Chamot 
(1999) learning strategies can help 
students of English become better 
learners. It means that, when teaching 
the vocabulary, the teachers must think 
the strategies how to make their 
students or young learners easier to get 
meaning of the words by themselves and 
they can use in their life. It can be 
concluded 
that, 
looking 
for 
the 
appropriate 
strategies 
in 
teaching 
vocabulary for young learner is important 
in order to help them in master a 
language.Here, the reseracher use 
Teaching Vocabulary before New Activity 
strategy to help students at SMP N 1 
Bangko to improve their vocabulary.
