Strategies for Teaching Vocabulary There are some strategies that can be used by the teachers for teaching vocabulary for Jnior High School students or young learners.Accoding to Linse (2005), there are some strategies or techniques which can be used for the teacher when teaching vocabularies for young learners. a) Emphasize both direct and in direct teaching It means that teachers teach vocabulary direct instructions refers to give the meaning, then teaching vocabulary with indirect instructions refers to the teachers let the students to look for the meaning of words by themselves. For example : Direct instructions, the teachers give a picture of fruit and the name of fruit in English. Indirect instructions, the teacher give the prefix of “ bi” , the teachers give a pic of bicycle and the students look for by themselves the meaning of picture by prefix “bi”. b) Teach vocabulary words before a new activity It means that the teachers give stimulate to children before learning or teachers give a word that has related with the topic before the learning process. The teacher also brings something that has related with the topic. For example : T : I have two things in my pocket, who want to see it S : Me...Me One students come to the teacher and see in teacher’s pocket. S : Oh candy and bread T : You want it? S : Of course.. Teacher give it to the students. The ilustrate above shown that the teachers give a new word in other activity, the teachers do not teach with permen is candy and roti is bread, but the teacher give a stimulate to the students to think the meaning of word by themselves with the activity. As we know that, the students at elementary school have more energic to remember the meaning of word which they are interested in. c) Teach how to use context clues appropietely In this activities, the teachers teach the vocabulary for the young Volume 1 No.2 November 2019 17 learners from the context. For example :The teachers give a clue like someone who sell a flower. Then, the students guess who is she?. After that, the students will guess that she/ he is a florist. d) Present Multiple exposures to new vocabularies item According to National institude of Child Health and Human Development in Linse (2005 :126) young learners make educational gains when they are exposed to vocabulary items repeatedly in rich contexts. It means that when teaching vocabulary for young learners, the teachers have to make the students remember the words every day. For example,if the teachers want to teach about things in the kitchen, so the teachers asked the students to bring a picture of something in the kitchen. Then, next week the teachers must make a game which use the picture things in the kitchen. e) Give opportunities for deep processing of vocabulary item This strategy give the students opportunity to use their cognitive skill to make a connection between new words and their prior knowledge. For example, when the teachers want to teach about something in a house, so the teachers let them to think or write that they know about the name of thing in their house. When the students find the difficulties, the teachers can help them in giving the name of something in English. f) Teach students to use dictionary Here, the teacher asked the students to open the dictionary to look for the meaning of the word. For example, the teacher gives a dictionary which has picture of the words and ask the students to look the picture. Then, ask them to read the name of picture in their dictionary. g) Students keep vocabulary notebooks It means that, the teachers asked the students to make a picture about the vocabulary and remembered the vocabulary by themselves. Futhermore, there are some strategies in learning vocabulary from Murcia (2006) that can improve students’ vocabulary, they are : a. Semantic mapping Semantic mapping can help the teachers to teach their students in learning vocabulary, semanting mapping is an activity that helps students to bring the consciousness relationships among words. It means that, the teachers make a map which connected with the words and asked the students to learn it. For example, if the teachers want to teach the vocabulary about things in house, so the teachers make a mapping about things in house. b. Word pairs Word pairs also can help the teachers to teach the students in learning vocabulary. The teachers word pairs then ask the students to look for the suitable words which has the same meaning. c. Guessing meaning from the context It can help the teacher to teach their students in improving vocabulary, because it will make the students feel easy to get or catch the meaning from the context. d. Mnemonic Devices This strategy asks the students to memory the word and make link with their first language in order to make the students or young learner to remember the meaning of the word. e. Vocabulary Notebooks This strategies, teachers ask the students to make a note about all the words which they do not know the meaning and looking for the meaning. Vocabulary note will help the students, because they will ease to read their own word and remember what they write. In this research, the researcher used the strategies teaching vocabulary words Volume 1 No.2 November 2019 18 before new activity. She gave some words that have related with the topic before they are in learning process. The teacher also brings something that has related with the topic. Download 0.74 Mb.
