18. Fairs & Festivals
Fairs & festivals in India are colourful commemorations of religious or historical events
or celebrations of the change of seasons. They reflect the vigour and life-style of its

people and provide unique experience to visitors. Vibrant colours, music and festivities
make the country come alive throughout the year. Fairs and festivals should be
assertively utilized to drive year-round, cross-country travel. Creating planning tools
such as annual calendars of fairs & festivals and publicising them well in advance will
enable tourists to include these in their itineraries.
19. Film Tourism
The medium of ‘Cinema’ is a powerful tool for popularizing destinations. Not only do
shooting films help the tourism industry and boost the local economy significantly, some
destinations have proven that films can be a cost effective method to market a
destination. Creating an inventory of shooting locations, enabling film shootings by
simplifying processes and issuing time bound clearances and incentivizing film makers
will help tap in to the opportunity.
20. Destination Weddings
India is known for its vibrant and colourful weddings and its spectacular palaces and
rituals can form an attractive proposition for destination weddings. The opportunity
exists to elevate this niche segment by linking together various locations and experience
creators (i.e. wedding planners, tour operators, and hoteliers etc.) to create attractive
offerings. Honeymoon is another attractive segment that can be targeted through
innovative product development and promotion.
21. Border Tourism
India has a long border with other countries. Border areas have their own unique tales
and
many resources are located at international boundaries. Border tourism has two
perspectives. First, the borderline is an anomalous part of the cultural landscape and an
interesting attraction. Second, the areas adjacent to a border have become settings for several
touristic activities. The first type exists because of a border’s physical composition, historic
boundary markers, welcome gateways, border-related infrastructure, divided towns and
buildings. The second attraction type owes its existence to the legal, cultural, and market
differences between the two sides.
