EXiSting configuRAtion of WAShington StREEt

PRoPoSEd configuRAtion With tRAnSit

•  LANE WIDTHS: This configuration allows

for  an  8-foot  wide  planted  median  with

trees,  two  11-foot  lanes  to  accomodate

new bus types and two ten-foot lanes to

accomodate cars

•  MEDIAN  -  The  median  provides  a

significant  benefit  to  the  corridor’s  scale

and visual apperance and should reduce

negative effects of stormwater runoff

•  TREE  LAWNS  -  Tree  lawns  are  shown

throughout  the  corridor,  which  would

provide safety and comfort to pedestrians

•  SIDEWALKS - The sidewalks shown here

are continuous and clean, which would be

a clear upgrade for pedestrians

ReEnergize East Washington Street

goAl 1:

bRt lAnES / cAR lAnES

In  coordination  with  efforts  by  Indy  Connect,  it  is

recommended that Washington Street be reconfigured

to provide 11-foot lanes for BRT service and 10-foot

lanes for auto travel. This can be configured within the

existing curb locations of Washington Street to avoid

widening the street.

MEdiAn With tREES

With  the  lane  configuration  shown  above,  there  is

space to allow for an 8-foot wide planted median with

trees.  While  this  dimension  is  more  narrow  than  is

customary for medians within arterial roadways, it is

still wide enough to enhance the street and reduce the

scale of the roadway.

goAl 3:

PRoPER StREEt EdgE

The edge of the street is the most critical component

for  improving  a  pedestrian’s  experience  and

beautifying  a  corridor.  By  working  with  property

owners as redevelopment or new development takes

place, community partners can assist in the decision

to include tree lawns, screening, or streetside seating.

goAl 4:

lightS + fuRniShingS

While lane configuration, medians and street edges are

important,  pedestrian  lighting  and  basic  furnishings

such as waste receptacles and seating are useful and

provide aesthetic character to the corridor.
