Rheumatic fever
This is an inflammatory disease that occurs as a result of infection
with Streptococcus bacteria. The source
of the infection is the
patient himself if he suffers repeated throat and tonsil infections.
This illness often appears in children between the ages of six and
twelve years.
Causes of rheumatic fever
1. Rheumatic fever may be the result
of an abnormal immune
response in individuals who are genetically predisposed to it, in
that the immune system attacks various parts of the body and
not just the Streptococcus bacteria.
2. Rheumatic fever may be preceded
by a respiratory infection
that shows no symptoms.
