WHAT’S NEXT? CHECKING THE EXAM AND ANSWER KEY FOR
ACCURACY
Before printing, check the exam and answer key for accuracy. Errors in the exam make it difficult
for students to show their knowledge and complete the exam successfully. You can check for
accuracy by reading through the exam as though you are a student. Can you easily complete the
exam? Are the directions clear? Is each task doable? Let’s take a closer look at two situations that
would require you to make changes to the exam.
CHECKING FOR ACCURACY
Take a look at this exam task created by the Test Generator and analyze it. Press Pause to think
about and write down what it is that needs to be changed.
Here you can see the changes that need to be made in red. Did you notice that each line is
numbered (1-9) but there are only 5 answers? This sometimes happens when the Test Generator
automatically numbers each line (even in lines that don’t require an answer). These items need to
be renumbered 1-5 to help students see where they are required to produce a response.

Did you also notice the numbers inserted within the text? You can see a number 4 in the middle
of line 1. The line says: “Now, what’s your (4) personal details / address?”. The number 4 should
be a number 1 to signal to students that this is where they will produce their first response. In this
example task, these numbers (4-8) that appear within the text need to be changed to 1-5 or
deleted entirely depending on what you feel would be most helpful for your students.
Let’s review one more example.
ALIGNING QUESTIONS WITH OPTIONS
Take a look at this second example created by the Test Generator. Read the directions and
analyze the task. Press pause to think about and write down what needs to be changed.
Again, you can see here the changes that need to be made in red. Did you notice that the options
listed in the right-hand column did not match the definitions in the left-hand column? Option a,
bald and option b, rude were not necessary. Instead, the options miserable and shy were needed but
not included in the options a-d.
This happens in matching activities because if there are 10 items available in a matching activity and
you selected 4 items, then the exam will automatically generate questions 1-4 and answers a-d.
The problem is that in a matching activity with 10 items the answers to 1-4 may not be found in
options a-d. In this case we delete the unnecessary options (bald and rude) and replace them with
the correct options (miserable and shy).
In the Teacher’s Book, there is an example of a completed test made from the Test Generator
with the answers. This is an example of how you can generate a test using the Test Generator.
SUMMARY
We have been busy! In this video, we discussed the following. Remember you can always refer to
this video any time you need to and watch it again.
COLLABORATE!
We recommend that you collaborate to discuss and plan approaches to creating exams before the
school year. Together, you can discuss preparation and implementation, as well as reflect during
the school year to collaborate and support each other. We also recommend that after the school
year you meet with your colleagues to reflect on what might need to be modified for next year.
When teachers feel supported and confident in how to use the teaching and learning materials,
everyone benefits!
