Association of Learning Technology – professional body to
represent learning technologists

Computer Mediated Communication
DC
Dublin Core – metadata standard to describe library resources
DfES
Department for Education and Skills – UK government
department responsible for education
DiVLE
Digital Library and Virtual Learning Environments – a JISC
programme of research investigating integration between
these two fields
DOI
Digital Object Identifier
HE
Higher education – the collective term for universities in the UK
ILTHE
Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, now
being replaced by the Higher Education Academy
IMS
IMS Global Learning Consortium Ltd – responsible for
specifications and standards in learning technology
JISC
Joint Information Systems Committee – funded by UK higher
education funding councils
LOM
Learning Object Metadata – metadata used to describe
‘learning objects’, which are any digital resource used in
learning, for example a piece of content, a self-test, a
PowerPoint presentation, etc.
LMS
To a librarian this term means Library Management System,
but beware, learning technologists may mean Learning
Management System – or VLE – when they use this term
