Introduction
Speaking is one of the four English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching skills and is important for both everyday communication and the educational process. We emphasize the significance of students’ communicative competence because the communicative approach is increasingly adopted in EFL situations. Due to curricula’s emphasis on English grammar, reading, and vocabulary, learners have significant difficulties developing conversational skills. Speaking and listening abilities are not regarded as essential components in many course manuals, and professors don’t appear to pay attention to these abilities while planning classes.
Speaking is “the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts”. It is a crucial part of foreign language learning and teaching. Despite its importance, for many years, teaching speaking has been undervalued and English language teachers have continued to teach speaking just as a repetition of drills or memorization of dialogues. As a result, most students find it difficult to speak English in EFL classes and some of them are reluctant to participate in speaking activities.
Speaking is often claimed to be the hardest skill to be taught among non-native ESL speakers since they often face impediments such as a first language barrier, an outdated teaching mindset and an assessment-focused learning system (Rao, 2019).
But nowadays teaching speaking has become a crucial aspect of language instruction for both learners and educators. Being able to communicate effectively in a language is fundamental for success in today's globalized world. As a result, teaching speaking requires a carefully planned approach that encompasses various language skills, including vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. This approach also involves providing learners with opportunities to practice speaking in real-life situations, such as in discussions, debates, and presentations.
The actuality of the course paper is the value of speaking ability in education. Additionally, teachers should use interactive teaching strategies and procedures to help students develop their foreign language speaking abilities.
The main aim of the course work is to instruct pre-intermediate level students in speaking about “Countries” using practical approaches such role plays, dialogue diaries, conversations, and group work.
The novelty of the course work is provided through a variety of engaging teaching techniques, detailed instructions, and topic-related handouts.
