The Mission o f H y d e r a b a d - D e c c a n was cut off fr om the V ica ria te A p o s to l ic of Madras in 1851 aud becam e a diocese in 1886. It is bounded': 1. On the East by the Bay of Bengal, on the North by the R iver G o d a v a r i, which separates it from the D io ce s e s o f V iz a g a p a ta m and N a gp u r . 2. On the West by the bo u n d a r y between the N iz a m ’ s States and the Bom ba y P r e s id e n c y , sep aratin g it from the P o on a Diocese. 3. On the South by the T u n g a b h a d ra and Kistna, which separates it fr om the A r c h d io c e s e o f Madras. Most o f tbe territory o f the Dioces e lies in tbe N iz a m ’ s D om in io ns. Tbe Eastern p ortio n o f the Diocese c o m p r is in g the K istna D ist rict is in British te rritory. E a r l y H i s t o r y . Little is k nown o f the early history o f this region. Certain docum ents relate that in the reign o f Ib rahim A dil Shah I (1535 -155 7), there were Christians in M oo dgul, in the south -w est of the diocese . It is likely that the earliest c o n v e r s io n s were made by the Fr an cis c an s who arrived in 1502. Soon after we read of Christians in R a ic h u r and Chita- pu r who were visited by priests from Goa, Urban V I I I in 1637 sent the Theatines to B ija p u r , near M oodgu l and R a ic h u r. In 1637 the Oratorian Mateo de Castro, a Brahmin, was made V i c a r A p o s to l ic o f the D eccan and Bija pur. Don Custodius de P in o s u c c e e d e d B isbo p de Castro iu 1669 ; tbe 3rd vic ar was Don B isco nti (1696 ). A f t e r 1696, all the V i c a r s A p o s t o l ic were D is calded Carm elites, In 1720, the island o f o f B om ba y was included into the vic a riate, which was then called V i c a r A p o s t o l ic o f B o m ba y. In 1707 Carmelites fr om G oa evan gelized M oodgu l. F o r the next 50 years M oodgu l was supplied with Jesuit missionaries. In 1797 Don P edro
