In 1042, the F r e n c h Ca puch in s started a Mission in Madras which was erected into a P r e fe ct u r e A p o s to l ic under P r o pag an da. The C apuchin s built the
Cathedral “ St. M ar y o f the A n g e l s , ” A rm e n ia n Street, in 1775 and St. A n d r e w ’ s, V e p e r y . This mission was kept up by the same o r d er until the su bsti tu tion o f a V i c a r ia t e A p o s t o l ic in 1832, which was confid ed to the Irish Missionar ies in 1834. It was raised to an A r c h ié p i s c o p a l See in 1886. The V i c a r ia te of M adras was at first very extensive, but was T e d u e e d by the

Fr. F r a n cis R i c c i, s.J., an eminen t th eolo gia n and skilled lin guist, who was well versed in both the Tamil and Telugu languages was the fo u n d e r o f that Mission. He was assisted by another Jesuit priest and a la y-brother skilled in the art o f pain tin g. This

It was o n ly in 1601 that 6 im m ig ra nts receiv ed baptism. Fr. A n t o n y R u b in o , a fu tu re m a rtyr in Ja pan, reached Chandragir i in 1607. In 1609 he wrote the fo llo w in g to his P r o v in c ia l : F rom the time this mission was fou nded till now, only 15 have been made Christiaus, and they are the dregs o f so cie ty. Their lives are so sc an da lo us that I have re so lv ed not to ba pti ze any other. A n d he entreated his su pe rio r to be allowed to go away to som e other place.
S.J., had begun at Madura new method of m issio na ry w ork by ad apti ng himself to the ways o f B ram in Sanya ssis. Between
1640 and 1688, other Jesuits, on the same line, beg an to spread the Gospel in the K in g d o m s of G in gee, Vello re and G olc on da . In 1704 the M is sio n o f the K a r n a tic was sep arated from the Madura Mission and confided to the F ren ch Jesuits who had been driv en away from Siam.
