whose au th orit y they had fo rsa ken, and to unite them a g a in with the Catholic Church. H a v in g failed in the first o b j e c t o f their mission , they su c ce ed e d at least in the se c o n d . R o m e b e in g in form ed o f their pa rtial su cce ss de cide d to c h a rg e the Carmelites with the sp iritual care o f the Syrian s. A f t e r 1663 when the Dutch bad c on q u er ed Coch in and expelled the P o r tu g u e se M is sio n aries, the Carmelites were also entr usted with the spiritual care o f the Lat in Christian s liv in g in D utch territory, the others r em a in in g under the G o v e r n m e n t o f Portu guese Bishops. Since 1701 a great part o f the Syrian Ca tholics were under the ju r is d i c t io n o f the A r c h b is h o p o f C r a n g a n o r e : in their ab sen ce they were g o v e r n e d by the Vica r-G eneral o f Cran gan ore, ap p o in te d by the A r c h b i s h o p o f Goa.
