M ys o re was e rected into a V i c a r i a t e in 1850, hav in g been separated fro m P o n d ie h e r r y in 1845. It be cam e a Diocese u nder the H ie r a r ch y in 1886. It c o m p r is e s the territorie s o f the M ah araja o f M ysore and the Brit is h P r o v in c e s o f Coorg, K o lle g a i T aluk , and the Taluk o f E o s u r , Salem D is trict. It is bou n ded ( 1 ) on the Nor th fr om Harihar ea stw ard, by the A r c h d i o c e s e o f Madras, and from H arih ar w estw ard, by the D io ce se o f P o o n a and G oa, the b o u n d a r y line b e in g the norther n bo r d er o f the M ysore te r r ito r y ; ( 2 ) on the W e s t by the D io cese o f M angalore, the W este rn Ghauts b e i n g the b o u n d a r y ; ( 3 ) on the South by the D ioce s e of Coim bato re, the b o u n d a r y line b e i n g the nort hern b o r d e r o f the D is trict o f C o im b a to r e ; ( 4 ) and on the East, pa rt ly by the A r c h d i o c e s e o f M adras and partly by that o f P o n d ic h e r r y . O rig in ally M ys o re belo n g ed to the A r c h d i o c e s e o f G oa, but what early mission w o r k was do n e there rem ains a matter o f o b s c u r it y . A t the b e g in n i n g o f the 17th ce n tu r y the Jesuits began a Mission a m o n g the Canarese. In 1650 they fou nded the sep arate M ission o f M ys o re w hich c o m p r ise d Sa lem and C o im ba tor e and w hich r e ce iv e d o v e r 10.0U0 Cath olics. B y the y ear 1760, the num ber o f C a th o lic s in the M ys o re Mission bad risen to 25,000. The Je suits w o rk e d the m ission till 1773, when the S o c ie t y o f Jesus was su ppressed. H o w e v e r ex -Jesuit s rem ained at their post till they d ie d out, u nder the j u r is d i c t io n o f the F o r e ig n M issions o f Par is to w h o m the Jesnit M issions had been en tr usted in 1776. A ft e r this date the H is tory o f M ysore is o n e with that o f P o n d i c h e r r y till 1845 when it was separated fr om the V i e a r i a t e of P o n d ic h e r r y .

The fam ous A b b e D ubois spent m ost o f his life am o n g the Canarese a t G a n j a m , Palha lly and Settibally. In the T e l u g u - s p e s k i n g c o u n t r v , mission s were started by the Jesuits as early as 1601. But the w o r k a d v a n c e d v ery little up to 1640. A t that time other Jesuits a d o p tin g themselves to the In dian w ays o f liv in g w o rk e d their way far into the K in g d o m s o f G in gee, Ve llo re and G o lc o n d a . In 1704 the K a r n a tic Mission was fou nded and confid ed to the French Jesuits driv en away fr om Siam by per se c u tio n . It r ece iv e d half of the K i n g d o m o f G in gee, the K in g d o m s of V e llo re and G o lco n d a and ov e r 5,000 Cath olics. In 1760, the num ber o f Catholics had risen to 30,000. A f t e r the suppressio n o f the Socie ty o f Jesus in 1773, the F rench Jesuits remained at their post, till they died out, under the ju r is d i c t io n o f the S u perio r o f the F o r e ig n Missions o f P aris to w hom the K a r n a tic Mis* sion bad been entr usted in 1776.
