CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF MALAYSIA

General information
With Asia's most important trade routes passing through Malaysia for centuries, its culture has been enriched by an incredible mix of traditions and influences. First, Chinese and Indian, then Arab and Persian merchants, and later colonialists from European states, brought part of their culture to these lands, creating a beautiful mosaic that became the basis for the creation of modern Malaysian society.
The foreign influence in Malaysia is best seen in ancient merchant centers like Penang, whose appearance resembles a Chinese rather than a Malay city.
Aboriginal culture in Malaysia
Representatives of the very first inhabitants of Malaysia - the native tribes of the Dayaks and Ibans, today inhabit the remote regions of the island of Borneo, preserving their unique culture dating back to the Stone Age.
The natives of Borneo, united by the common name of Orang-Asli ("Original People"), today make up only 5% of the total population of Malaysia. They live in neighboring communities on the territory of the so-called "long houses", uniting all members of the family under one roof.

In the recent past, the natives of Borneo led a closed life and were famous for their militancy and wild customs, such as, for example, the custom of cutting off and keeping the heads of defeated enemies in their homes. In the era of globalization and digital technologies, the unique culture of dyaks has become part of a booming tourism industry.

Now everyone can try on an exotic bounty hunter's outfit, shoot at targets with a deadly blowgun, admire tribal dances and ceremonies, while tasting the native arak moonshine with the leader under the roof of a long house.
