The Sabiri language consisted of elements from several other languages spoken in the Mediterranean region, using a simplified form of Italian in which verbs did not need to be conjugated, and included vocabulary from Spanish, French, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, and Berber. . Sabir is a good example of how a pidgin, a language created by mixing elements from different languages, can serve as a lingua franca. Trade routes across the Mediterranean led to the creation of a lingua franca such as sabir. Trade routes in medieval Europe Before the term lingua franca was coined, people found ways to communicate despite speaking different languages. For example, Aramaic functioned as a lingua franca in Babylonia, Palestine, Syria, and Egypt from the seventh century BC to the seventh century AD. Subsequently, over the centuries, many languages have served as the lingua francas in various regions of the world, including Greek, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, Malay, Hausa, and English. Lingua Franca Characteristics The characteristics of lingua francas include three ways of creating them: by adopting an existing mother tongue, by combining elements of several languages, or by using a third language that is not the mother tongue of any of the speakers. Native languages of conquest and empire One of the main characteristics of lingua francas is that they often arise from conquest and empire building. In these cases, the language of the conquerors is used as the lingua franca. Latin became the lingua franca and spread throughout the Mediterranean and parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia when the Romans conquered these territories from the 1st to the 5th century AD. As a lingua franca, Latin was used in official documents, trade and negotiations, although those who were conquered by the Romans continued to speak their native languages. Latin functioned as a lingua franca and allowed communication between them and the Romans. Similarly, when Spain colonized the New World from the 15th to the 20th century, Spanish became the lingua franca in much of Central America and South America. Spanish continues to be used as the lingua franca in politics, diplomacy and wider cultural interaction. The expansion of the British Empire over several centuries led to English becoming the global lingua franca. Map of the British Empire English is currently the most widely used global lingua franca. English as the world's lingua franca emerged from the expansion of the British Empire and the subsequent rise of the United States as a world power in the twentieth century. Download 113.12 Kb.
