a. Understand the types of questions - Part One – Personal Questions. - Part Two – Individual Response. - Part Three – General Opinion Questions. - Total time – Approximately fourteen minutes.
- Speak English as much as possible. - Record your speaking and try to self-correct your mistakes when you listen to yourself. - Transcribe your speaking to read how you speak. - Always think about different tenses (for example: past simple tense for completed events, present continuous for events happening now).
- Enter the exam room in a positive and enthusiastic way. - Smile to show your confidence. - Make eye contact with the examiner while you speak. - Always have strong and positive body language. - Make the examiner interested by using many examples and making your answers interesting.
- Extend your answers – speak for as long as you can on each question to show you have many ideas, but always stay close to the topic you are speaking about. - Answer the question - you must start by answering the question. Even if your answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’, you need to give an answer. - Give your reasons - use background information to support your answer. - When giving a reason, start sentences with ‘This is because...’. - Give examples - you can easily speak for longer by giving examples. This is also
20 interesting for the examiner. - Give a contrast - If you don’t know what else to say, of if you get stuck for an answer, you can give a contrast by talking about the opposite. “On the other hand...” c. Speaking Strategies Part Two - You will be given a card with a question and some note paper to prepare your answer. - You only have one minute to write a few words for each part of your answer. - Do not write sentences, just a few words to help you stay on track. - You have two minutes to speak, so if there are four points to talk about, you should speak about them for 30 seconds each (eg. What, when, why, where) - You must answer each part of the question. - Do not go ‘off track’ and answer something else. d. Speaking Part One Example Questions - What is your name? - What can I call you? - What is a special kind of food in your country? - When do people from your country eat this food? - Is this food difficult to prepare? Why or why not?
Describe an event in your life that you remember very clearly. You should say: - What was the reason for the event. - When the event happened. - Who was there at the time. - You should also explain why the event made such a strong impression on you.

Speaking Part Three Example Questions Do you think eating habits in your country have changed in the past twenty years? - What are the reasons for these changes? - How do you think eating habits might change in the future? - How important is television advertising for eating habits in your country? 21
