Common reading problems
a. Too slow - IELTS reading is a test of speed and reading strategies. - You must skim and scan instead of reading the whole text to have time to answer all forty questions. - Do not read the whole text or you probably will not have time to finish the exam.
b. Cannot understand vocabulary - You do not need to understand all the vocabulary to get a good score. - Most of the time, you only need to understand the vocabulary that helps you to answer the question. - Use the context (surrounding information and words) to help you understand important words. 11
Common problems a. Cannot find the answers - Synonyms in the questions and text are often used in IELTS reading. - If you have problems finding the answers, you need to focus on finding the words and phrases that have two meanings. - For example, the question may be about a ‘major communication problem’. In the text, this information may be written as ‘significant difficulties faced when transferring information’.
- The words you need to write on the answer sheet are written in the texts, so you should not have problems trying to remember how to spell words. - Be very careful when writing your answers on the answer sheet. - A spelling mistake will cost you a mark.
- Remember there is no transfer time for IELTS reading. - You must complete your answer sheet during the test.
There is no time to read the whole passages so the following ways to read must occur: - Skim to understand the main idea of the questions. - Skim the text. - Scan to find the locations of the answers. - Detailed read to choose the correct answer.
