During the reading exam
a. Skim read the questions first
- Skim the questions first to understand what the topic is about.
- Underline keywords in questions, including names and dates.
- You should only spend about thirty seconds skimming all the questions for
one text.
b. Skim read the passage
- Skim the headings, sub-headings and the first sentences of each paragraph.
This gives you the main idea of the text. This should only take about sixty
seconds for each text.
- You must not read the whole article from start to finish because you do not
have time.
c. Scan the text for the location of answers
- For each question, quickly scan the text to find the location of the answers.
- Look for synonyms (words with the same meanings) and parallel
expressions (phrases with the same meaning) which are often used in the
questions and answers. For example, the phrase ‘a great deal of information’
means the same as ‘a huge amount of data’. This should help candidates find
the location of the answer in the text.
d. Detailed reading
- When you have found the location of the answer, you need to read slowly
and carefully to make sure you choose the correct answer.
