While you listen
a. Think about who is speaking - Is the speaker a buyer or a seller? - If there are two or three people, who are they? - Is the person an expert about a topic? - Is there one person asking questions and another person answering questions? b. Listen for specific details - Focus very carefully on the small details. - Do not just think about what the object is, you may be asked how old it is, how much it costs, what material it is made of. c. Listen for word stress - Usually the most important information is stressed, which means it is said loudly, with emphasis. - The answers to the questions are often stressed, therefore you should listen 6
for stressed words, as these are often the answers to the questions. - You should write down stressed words if you do not know the answers, as you may be lucky and find an answer. - Listening for word stress is especially helpful in part four of the speaking exam, when the information being discussed is more difficult.
- Often the speaker will give some information which is important for an answer. Then suddenly the speaker will stop and change the information. - For example, the speaker will say: ‘The phone number is 5639 3772, no, sorry, the number is 5638 3227’. - This usually happens in section one, when there is information being exchanged between two people. - Be prepared to change your answer. e. Follow two questions at the same time - When you listen, look at two questions at the same time (for example, look at question six and question seven at the same time). - If you only look at one question you may get lost, because if you don’t hear the information you are expecting, you will still be waiting and you will miss the next answer. - Always make sure you look over the page, at two or more questions so you always stay with the listening. f. Be patient - The listening section often has tricks, including information that is almost correct or has the same sound but different meaning from another word. - Do not answer your questions too early, because the second the piece of information may be more accurate than the first piece of information. - Try to wait for the correct answer to come to you. g. Write down guesses - You only hear the information one time, so you should write down your answers or guesses as you hear them.
- You need to listen for details, so you have to concentrate very hard for 30 minutes. - This type of intense listening for details is not common in everyday life so concentrate hard. - During the last part of the exam candidates often become tired, so it is important to keep focused and keep listening until the end. 7
