Makhno  accommodated  him-

self  to  the  changing  political

and  military  situation,  con-

ducting

now  against  the  whiteguards,

now  against  the  Red  Army

(in  the  summer  of  1918  he

carried  on  for  a  time  a  parti-

san  struggle  against  the  land-

owners,  German  occupation-

ists  and  the  Hetman).  During

the  first  half  of  1919,  with  the

re-establishment  of  Soviet  pow-

er  in  the  Ukraine,  Makhno

took  a  sharply  hostile  stand

towards  the  dictatorship  of  the

proletariat.  In  the  spring  of

1921  the  Makhno  bands  were

routed  by  the  Soviet  troops.—

officer  in  the  tsarist  army.

After  the  October  Revolution

sided  with  the  Left  Socialist-

Revolutionaries.  At  the  begin-

ning  of  1918  commanded  the

troops  operating  against  the

Ukrainian  Central  Rada  and

against  Kaledin.  In  July  1918,

acting  as  Commander  of  the

troops  of  the  Eastern  Front,

he  betrayed  the  Soviet  govern-

ment  and  attempted  to  raise

a  revolt  among  the  troops.

Offered  resistance  during  his
