Theme:LINGUOPRAGMATIC STUDY OF LITOTES IN THE ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES

The object and the subject of the research. The object of the dissertation work is stylistic features of litotes in English and Russian, and the subject of the study is the analysis of stylistic functions of litotes through linguopragmatic matter and the presentation and deployment of them in English and Russian.

The aims and objectives of the research. The aim of the work is to look through the necessary detailed points of linguopragmatic and linguocultural analysis of litotes in English and Russian, especially their stylistic usages in poetry, poems which obtains tremendous stimulations in linguistics, investigate stylistic functions of litotes.

According to this main aim following particular objectives are put forward:

1. to look through sources of linguocultural studies as a branch of linguistics;

2. to identify the stylistic devices, their functions, subdivisions and

classifications;

3. the acquaintance with litotes as a stylistic device and its usage;

4. to analyze the stylistic device-litotes from linguocultural point of view in the English and Russian languages.

5. to analyze the lexical and grammatical features of litotes in translation from English into Russian.

First of all, it is very significant to analyze the background of the word “litotes”. The first time this word is mentioned is in a letter from Cicero in 56 B.C. In this letter the meaning of the word is “simplicity (or frugality) of life”. Over time the meaning and the function of the word changed. It went from meaning simple to using the idea of understatement which involves double negatives. The idea was that you wanted to say something as impressive and unambiguous as possible.
