Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine was established in September 1958 to develop the large uranium deposit Uchkuduk , located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert.
In the early 60s of the last century, the construction of GMZ-1 began at an accelerated pace. Its purpose is to introduce a technology for processing uranium-containing ores from the Uchkuduk deposit.
The site for the construction of the plant was chosen taking into account the proximity of the Zarafshan River, and, consequently, the possibility of further construction of an energy base for the entire industrial complex; the presence of the railway; the central location of the plant in relation to ore deposits. The source of electrical and thermal energy is the Navoi State District Power Plant. The plant is supplied with water from the Zarafshan River.
In 1969, a calcination department was put into operation at GMZ-1. The plant began to produce uranium oxide.
