“Leo” (cover name in Vassiliev’s notebooks): Ludwig Lore. All of the particulars of “Leo” (his journalistic work and the trajectory of his journalistic commentary on Soviet matters in the 1930s) fit Lore. In addition, Whittaker Chambers described his own contacts with Lore and comments of Soviet intelligence officers about Lore fit the description of “Leo” in Alexander Vassiliev’s notebooks. Further, Julius Kobyakov, retired senior KGB officer, identified “Leo” as Lore in 2004. 88
