In short, the traditional teaching views that it is the teacher that causes learning to occur. In the pre-technology education context, the teacher is the sender or the source, the educational material is the information or message, and the student is the receiver of the information. In terms of the delivery medium, the educator can deliver the message via the “chalk-and-talk” method and overhead projector transparencies. This directed instruction model has its foundations embedded in the behavioural learning perspective (skinner, 1938) and it is a popular technique, which has been used for decades as an educational strategy in all institutions of learning. Some limitations which may prevail in the traditional teaching methods are- 1. Encourages one-way communication. 2. Places students in a passive rather than an active role, which hinders learning. 3. Teacher often continuously talks for an hour without knowing students response and feedback. 4. The material presented is only based on lecturer notes and textbooks. 5. Teaching and learning are concentrated on “Plug and play” method rather than practical aspect. 6. The handwriting of the lecturer decides the fate of the subject. 7. More emphasise has been given on theory without any practical and real life time situation. 8. Learning from memorization but not understanding. 9. Marks rather than result oriented. V. M ODERN T EACHING L EARNING P ROCESS A ND I NNOVATIVE M ETHODS O F T EACHING The traditional methods and techniques have been replaced by new methods and techniques in the last two decades in western countries. We can also benefit from these new methods and techniques, if we faithfully implement them in our classroom communication. Modern teaching is student- centred learning in which teacher will become guides and mentors helping students access, interpret, organize and transfer knowledge to solve authentic problems, while students gain expertise not only in the content areas being studied, but also in learning. In fact teachers become more like a guide on the side of helping students to find answers to real life problems. There are many strategies for teaching economics in innovative way like interactive lectures, print media, electronic media, power point presentation, problem solving based learning, case-study method, project-based learning, etc. In this letter an attempt is made to highlight a few of the strategy that make class more interactive. 5.1. Interactive Lecture – In a traditional lecture method we find that most students are bored, disengaged and distracted. Now a day, we can modify this method to make it more enriching for the student which known as interactive lecture .An interactive lecture is an easy way for instructors to intellectually engage and involve students as active participants in a lecture- based class of any size. Interactive lectures are classes in which the instructor breaks the lecture at least once per class to have students participate in any activity that lets them work directly with the material. Another activity which is very useful in interactive lectures is brainstorming. This short exercise, in small groups or pairs gives an idea as to how much students are aware of atopic before it is introduced in the class. 5.2. Mind Maps – A mind maps is a diagram used to visually organize information. A mind maps is often created around a single concept, drown as an image in the centre of a blank landscape page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those. Mind maps can be used by teachers to explain concepts in an innovative way. They are much quicker to make and much easier to remember and review because of their visual quality. The non linear nature of mind maps makes it easy to link and cross-reference different element s of the map. Mind maps are also very quick to review, as it is easy to refresh information in our mind just by glancing once. Mind maps can also be effective mnemonics and remembering their shape and structure can provide and the cues necessary to remember the information within it. They engage much more of the brain in the process of assimilating and connecting facts than conventional notes. 5.3. Multimedia Learning Process – Multimedia, is the combination of various digital media types such as text, images, audio and video, into an integrated multi-sensory interactive application or presentation to convey information to an audience.
