1 SECTION A: PGCE (I) MODULE CONTENT & ASSIGNMENT DETAILS MODULE 1: Contexts 1.1 Purposes of the School Curriculum Although it may be concealed under the surface of everyday activity, every teacher has a philosophy of teaching. This opening Unit aims to bring the philosophy which is hidden in your own classroom practice out into the open. As well as asking you to consider actual and possible purposes for education, this Unit will also encourage you to think about different ways in which the curriculum may help to realize educational aims. 1.2 Understanding Educational Systems In the previous Unit, you considered the hidden assumptions which underpin any teacher’s practice. In this Unit, we would like you to think more about some of the ways in which the varying attitudes of teachers in different countries might present problems for an international course like this one. The aim of the Unit is to consider some of the difficulties involved in transferring teaching techniques and recommendations of good practice from one culture or nation to another. 1.3 Understanding the Classroom In this Unit, you will consider the ways in which a stimulating and safe learning environment can be established. You will be involved in observation of classrooms using two approaches. The first is an observation negotiated with a classroom teacher where you will explore individual children’s engagement in learning activities. The second will involve a multimodal approach, exploring a range of foci (modes), which contribute to building up the teaching and learning environment. The aim of the Unit is to help you to develop an understanding of the value of different types of classroom observation as a means of teacher professional development. 2 Download 277.76 Kb.
